Colloidal fluid. Real-time confocal microscopy |
Physics of colloids |
We employ confocal microscopy and light scattering to study phase transitions in systems of colloids, micron-sized particles, undergoing Brownian motion in a liquid. Colloids exhibit liquid, crystalline, glass, gel and liquid-crystalline phases, mimicking atoms and molecules. Employing confocal microscopy, we follow tens of thousands of individual particles in real time, in three dimensions. This unprecedentedly-detailed experimental information, which is not available with any other experimental technique, allows a much deeper understanding of phase transitions to be achieved, applicable for a wide range of physical systems. |
